Don't know whether to feel relieved or depressed. Since I'm already pretty senior in my department, I decided to try out for a subspecialization programme by sending in an application. Truth to tell, I was a little afraid of getting it since I'm hardly prepared to undergo the rigours of burning the midnight oil studying again.
But when I received the news half an hour ago that I was much too junior and inexperienced - and to try again this year, I found myself at point-non-plus. Not sure if I feel a little low or a little elated since I have another year to prepare.

I know what you're talking about. You know that you really don't want to do the studying, but at the same time if you don't get the job/promotion you feel somewhat annoyed that you were overlooked.
It's a strange range of emotions and so on. Just a bizarre experience. Relief as well as let down.
I'm not that young :) Still 28 this year but that's old!
Jason, you're so right! I'm terrified of cramming for exams all over again but I certainly don't want to be left behind in the aptly named rat-race.

I guess since I'm 18, I am deprived of the privilege of winging about my age ;) but seriously, 28 isn't old. You're not old if you're still in your 20's, if you lived to be a hundred, you've only used up around 1/4 of your life.
And talking about "experience", I've been trying to look for a part-time job and every single ad I come across has that word in it, but I don't have any and that leaves me jobless and spending my parent's money on stuff that they shouldn't have to pay for anymore.
BTW savante, you didn't mention what program you had intended to go for. Can I ask what residency you're presently in? Didn't see it in your profile.
Poor Drew, I know what you mean though. Every job seems to be looking for experience but if you don't get a job, how are you gonna get any experience?
I'm doing a residency in anaesthesiology.

I would trust you to knock me out on the table Paul. Don't they say that everything happens for a reason. Maybe the Karma is off and if you take this trip at this time you will miss your soul-mate. Maybe he won't be there til the next time you go. See? Everything will line up in a row and will fit.
