Techno-himbo

Seriously that's what I am. A Techno-Himbo.

I've had the same laptop for several years now and I've been looking to get a new one. It's an age-old story that has been repeated time and again... It's time for a change after all, to bring in the new model and throw away the reliable, trustworthy - but slightly wrinkly, cellulite-and-porn laden old laptop.

Tentatively I broached this request to my ISO - and he started blabbering some mumbo-jumbo about gigabytes, hertz and pixels. All I could see was his cute lips moving and wondering if he would shut the hell up if I were to kiss him. I admit it, I'm an utter himbo when it comes to computers. Sure, word processing and spreadsheets are fine sine anyone with half a brain should be able to come up with something but when it comes to technospeak, I am utterly lost.

That wasn't the worst of it. When he heard that I still subscribe to a dial-up connection, I think he almost suffered a stroke there and then. Hell, if I'd known that was what it would take to kill him, I would have told him years back. Since my home's pretty far out in the suburbs, I haven't had the choice of broadband till recently - and I have been far too complacent to set it up.

So right now I have a choice between Dell and perhaps Acer... any ideas?

Let's get you a sweaty musculine broadband engineer to set up the equipment then!

Both are good brands. It all depends on what you features you want.

Price-wise, I think Dell would be slightly cheaper, for a similar Acer laptop.

Though NEC is not too bad either.

You can get one with a DVD burner (for all those porn) for under RM4,000, wireless, 40GB, the usual.

My friends asked me what features I wanted too... and I stared at them with a DUH expression. :)

Dell provides commendable technical support. I think you can get rebate too if you purchase online.

It just so happen that I went to a meeting of a tech webboard that I am a member and few of the guys were discussing notebooks.

One guy recommend IBM, because they guaranteed all parts for 3 years.

But I think its depends on your style and needs since IBM's notebook tend to be rather big.

For Savvy looks perhaps Sony Vaio? But that is rather costly.

Also comtemplate on whether u want big screen or small screen which will implicate the size of the notebook u will get (Since the size of the machine will be dictate by the monitor's size).

If you will only use it for Word and Excel and Internet, there is no need to get too powerful machine but instead get one with WiFi (wireless net connection).

The guy I'md ating now is looking to get a new latop too...with about the same specifications and price range. We'll be at the PC fair tomorrow, hopefully we'll see something we like. We'll keep you posted.

Dell and Acer is a hard comparison.

On one hand, Dell is slightly pricier. Someone's got to pay for all those ads, u noe?

On the other, Acer servicing is not very popular, but seems generally reliable.

For stability, why not go with Toshiba or Fujitsu? Those two are great, but Fujitsu's quite expensive too. But a hunky doctor like you might be able to get discounts...

And if you want screw brackets that crack and CD-ROM drives that won't close, go with Twinhead! They're guaranteed to be a big waste of your money! :P

A Sony Vaio does look great but I think it's a tad too costly for someone who's just gonna type stories in it :) I don't even play that many games on it. Gotta think about the Toshiba and the Fujitsu.

Yeah, Will, go take a look and tell me what he gets. Better yet, tell us about the guy :)
